The public response to Moore’s death was frankly unexpected. Nobody could remember such an emotional show of public affection for a sporting figure. At West Ham the response was immediate, as thousands of fans and well-wishers made the pilgrimage to the Boleyn Ground to pay their respects and say goodbye. Shirts, scarves, messages, wreaths and flowers adorned the gates to the ground, which became a shrine to his memory. Moore died on a Wednesday, and later that week visitors to Upton Park stood in stunned silence at the sight of the gates, which by this time were a sea of claret and blue. Complete strangers wept in each other’s arms, overcome with emotion and a profound sense of loss. As one fan said at the time, “Bobby’s death rocked the country ... you just don’t see scenes of public unity like this today.”
To achieve this kind of emotional outpouring there had to be something about Bobby Moore that transcended football. Certainly, he was hugely popular during his life, but the level of grief surprised his wife, Stephanie, who said:
